On March 7, 1965, hundreds of civil rights activists marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in a peaceful protest for voting rights. They were met with violent resistance, but their courage sparked a nationwide outcry and helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
In this book, I wanted to record what happened leading up to Bloody Sunday and focus on those who are often overlooked in history—heroes and sheroes like C.T. Vivian, Jimmy Lee Jackson, James Orange, and Amelia Boynton Robinson. Their strength, sacrifice, and dedication paved the way for change. We must never forget their stories, their impact or what happen before Bloody Sunday.
